We at Kotagiri Septic Tank Cleaning are a team of professionals dedicated to cleaning septic tanks throughout the Nilgiri District of Tamil Nadu. We utilize advanced compressor machines to effectively empty septic tanks.

We initially started the business with a Bolero pickup truck. In this setup, we used a water disposal motor to pump sewage into a 2000-liter tank on the truck. However, the hose often broke, causing spills in various locations. The Pickup truck is banned in Tamil Nadu. To address this issue, we decided to upgrade our equipment by transitioning to a modern vehicle, with the support of the Shankar Narayan Memorial Library, a non-registered initiative run by Prof. Shiva Shankar.

In Tamil Nadu, misconceptions and unprofessional practices often surround septic tank service providers. Many charge per liter without giving customers a clear estimate beforehand, leading to unexpected final bills. In the Nilgiri District, some operators even demand customers buy items like refined oil and soap while imposing significant fees. Unfortunately, there are limited avenues for customers to address these concerns. However, we say, “Promoting transparency and professionalism would greatly benefit both customers and service providers.

Motto
‘Self-respect’ is an essential part of living, and we aim to change the perception of sanitation work in India. Sanitation should be regarded as a legitimate profession, not one that is solely associated with marginalized castes. We encourage those already in the work of sanitation to take up this business. Though it is associated with marginalized castes, but in the bigger picture only the laborers are from marginalized castes but the owners are from the caste Hindus. We aim to change this psyche of the sanitation workers, to take sanitation as a business rather than mere daily wage laborers. Above all, we encourage the cleaning industry to adopt modern technology to better meet customer needs and ensure laborers’ health.

Mrs.Arukkani my mother’s vision
Mrs. Arukkani throughout her life believed in ‘Educating anyone who wants to study’. She strongly insisted that women should earn money and never depend on their
husbands, as this fosters self-respect and equality in marital relationship. Most importantly, she aimed to change the negative perception of sanitation workers and their work. Although she helped many people and provided loans, she managed her finances very well. I still remember our last conversation when she mentioned she didn’t have enough money to buy beef. However, after her passing, we discovered Rs. 10000 in her cupboard and savings in her account, this incident gave me a sense of the importance of financial management she truly maintained her finances like a king.

Our Team

We are a team dedicated to bringing change in the sanitation industry. Our venture is supported by numerous volunteers across India, particularly from organizations such as the Shankar Narayan Memorial Library, KeyStone, and individuals like Susan Dhavle and others associated with Dalit Camera. The initiative to address discrimination against sanitation businesses in India was spearheaded by Dr. Raees Muhammad and Ms. Karpagam Allimuthu. The owner of the business is Ms. Karpagam Allimuthu.

Message from Dr.Raees Muhammad alias Ravichandran Bathran:

I would like to begin with a brief introduction about myself. I am Dr. Raees Muhammad, also known as Ravichandran Bathran. My mother, Mrs. Arukkani, worked as a sweeper and also cleaned toilets at St. Mary’s Home School in Kotagiri. My father, Mr. P. Bathran, served as a sweeper for 30 years at the Kotagiri Town Panchayat before retiring.

I completed my primary education at St. Mary’s Home School in Kotagiri and then attended St. Joseph’s Boys High School in Barracks, Coonoor, as well as the National Tutorial Center in Kotagiri. I earned my undergraduate degree from Government Arts College in Coimbatore. Subsequently, I pursued my Master’s, MPhil, and PhD at the English and Foreign Languages University (formerly known as the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages) in Hyderabad.

I have also been a fellow at the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies in Shimla and completed a post-doctoral program at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa. Currently, I am pursuing my LLB at IMT Law College in Shantapuram, Kerala.

During my childhood, my parents often told me that we needed to take action regarding sanitation because no one seemed to care. This inspired me to pursue a PhD in sanitation, followed by a postdoctoral study on the same topic. However, my writings on the subject did not change people’s perceptions of sanitation in India. As a result, I resigned from my position as Assistant Professor of English at the Distance Education program of Madras University and started a business focused on cleaning septic tanks. Initially, with crowdfunding we managed to mobilize small funds which helped to pay the initial amount to buy a bolero pickup truck, with the support of KeyStone Foundation we got syntax, hose, and motor. After a few years, with the financial support of Prof. Shiva Shankar got money to build a top-class tanker and an initial amount to pay for the truck.
